The Short Answer That Saves Money

If you’re torn between an ID mount and OD mount pipe beveler, stop looking at your pipe diameter for a second.

Ask yourself just one question: Does your pipe end have a flange, fitting, or anything blocking access?

  • Blocked? → OD mount (external clamping)
  • Open? → ID mount (internal expansion)

That’s it. I see people overcomplicating this every day with wall thickness charts and diameter ranges. While those matter for sizing the machine, they don’t help you pick the type.


The Expensive Mistake Most People Make

I get asked this question at least twice a week. And almost every time, the customer has already been told by some catalog-reader: “Use ID for small pipes, OD for large pipes.”

This advice is incomplete at best, and a disaster at worst.

I once had a client buy a $5,000 ID mount beveler for 6” pipes—perfectly reasonable by the “diameter rule.” They unboxed it, walked up to their first spool, and realized they couldn’t use it. Why? Because 80% of their spools already had flanges welded on one end, and the other end was too close to an elbow.

An ID mount beveler needs to reach inside the pipe. If there’s a flange 2 inches from the end, the mandrel hits a wall. Game over. Now they own a machine they can’t use.

Don’t be that guy.


The Only Factor That Actually Matters: Pipe End Condition

Forget the “rules of thumb.” Look at your actual pipe ends.

Secondary factors (Only look at these AFTER you check the end condition)

  1. Wall thickness: If your pipe is soda-can thin (<3mm), ID expansion might deform it out of round. OD clamps are gentler on thin walls.
  2. Surface finish specs: OD clamps will leave small marks on the outside paint/coating. ID clamps leave marks inside. Which one does your QC inspector care about?
  3. Weight: ID mount machines like our ISE T-Model are generally lighter because they don’t need a massive external frame.

My Selection Logic

When I’m helping a customer build a quote, this is the exact logic I use:

Scenario A: The Prefab Shop

“We are cutting and beveling raw pipe before welding flanges.”

My Recommendation: ID Mount. It’s faster. You drop it in, expand the mandrel, and cut. No need to clear space around the pipe exterior. The ISE T-Model is the workhorse here.

Scenario B: The Maintenance Crew

“We are repairing existing pipelines, cutting out old valves and welding in new ones.”

My Recommendation: OD Mount. You never know what you’ll find in the field. Maybe the pipe is out of round? Maybe it’s full of crud? Maybe there’s an elbow right there? The ISC Block Type (OD Mount) is safer because it doesn’t rely on the pipe’s internal condition.


When You Actually Need Both

If you are a serious fabrication shop, the honest truth is: You probably need both.

I know, that sounds like a sales pitch. But think about the downtime cost.

  • ID mount is your daily driver for speed in the shop.
  • OD mount is your “get out of jail free” card for tricky field joints and flanged ends.

If budget is tight and you can ONLY buy one:

  • If you do 100% shop work on raw pipe: Buy ID Mount.
  • If you do field repairs or flanged spools: Buy OD Mount. It’s slower to set up, but it works on almost everything.
